Abstract

The relationships between solar activities (sunspots, solar 10.7 cm radio flux, solar irradiance, and solar proton events) and local earthquakes are investigated in this paper. The geographical focus is New Zealand, analyzing data for M ≥ 4 earthquakes from 1970 to June 2012. Results show an increasing number of earthquakes annually. The maximum number of earthquakes frequently coincides with minimum years of solar activity, sunspot numbers, and solar 10.7 cm radio flux, with strong correlation coefficients.
